Apple AirPods

Is it still worth buying the lower tier AirPods in 2020?

Apple AirPods

If you have an iOS device and are looking for a pair of earbuds, the Apple Airpods are a no brainer.

"Siri is also enabled and ready to go as well as the simple feature of pausing the audio (and video if you are watching something) when taking one of the earbuds out of your ear."

Apple AirPods Specs:

  • H1 headphone chip

  • Bluetooth 5.0

  • Double-tap to play, skip forward, or answer a phone call

The Good:

The simplicity of using the AirPods makes an average user feel like a pro. Simply open the case while near your iPhone and it will automatically pair to your phone. Simple, quick and effective. From there, gestures are what really makes the AirPods stand out. For example, double tapping on one side of the headphones would skip a song. These features are completely customizable within the iPhone settings, something that apple usually lacks on occasion. Siri is also enabled and ready to go as well as the simple feature of pausing the audio (and video if you are watching something) when taking one of the earbuds out of your ear. Looking back at the standard set of headphones that come with the purchase of an iPhone, I have always been impressed with the sound quality of them. This is no different with the AirPods. Bass does not distort the sound quality, but it does pack a punch in your ear if the volume is turned up.

"I understand that the features are intended to be used at its best with iOS, but there is no need to dumb it down to its core of just listening."

The Bad:

I understand Apple wants to sell their product as a premium price but ($160) for the cheapest set is a little steep. Fortunately there are a ton of sales on third party sites that could possibly bring the price to under $100 depending on where you look. Another issue I have with the AirPods is the actual need for a wireless charging case. You can really cut the cost down by opting to buy the set that does not have the wireless charger. The battery life is great when using the charging case with downtime, and it seems more like a luxury than purpose to have it wireless. Lastly, when paired to an android, or anything else that accepts headphones most of the features are gone that would be used in iOS. I understand that the features are intended to be used at its best with iOS, but there is no need to dumb it down to its core of just listening. At least have the ability to manually pause audio from the headphones.

Overall:

Apple typically creates quality products, and the AirPods are no different. Being able to pair and use these instantly right out of the box is impressive. If you are in the field for a pair of earbuds and have an iOS device, the AirPods seem like a no brainer.  Just be prepared to spend a little more money on them than other earbuds.
