Does a 2016 tablet have a purpose in 2020?

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 (2016 With S Pen)

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 2016 version still can hold its own in 2020 with certain limitations...

Specs:

  • PLS LCD capacitive touchscreen

  • Exynos 7870 Octa (14 nm) Chipset

  • 16 GB Memory (SD Slot Available)

Good:

If you are in the market for a tablet for viewing video content such as an Amazon Kindle fire (Netflix, Hulu Plus, etc.), a cheaper android tablet may be the way to go for certain users. Having the perks of the Google Play Store already in my opinion out ranks the Kindle Fire OS. Yes you can sideload the app on a kindle fire, but why even have to go through that headache? An older option such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab A (2016 Version) is a cheap, reliable device. The tablet offers a great screen to view videos (1080p) as do all of the samsung devices from their screen manufacturing. Even though the tablet is 4 years old, it still rivals the lower end tablet based on speed, performance, and the viewing screen. After using the tablet as my daily driver for over a year, I could say I would rather prefer this device over a 10 inch Kindle fire that is more expensive. Also, this tablet is the version that comes with a S pen. The ability to edit docs, jot down a quick note, or just have a child draw on it, is a nice change of pace.

Bad:

There are limitations to this device though. As stated before, it is a 4 year old tablet. Certain newer apps are slowing down the tablet to the point that it is inoperable such as demanding high graphic games. Also, the tablet is actually pretty heavy. It has a small form factor of 10 inches, but the weight seems at times heavier than a chromebook. Lastly, it is capped out at a lower version of Android (8.1). So do not expect the OS to be operating at 9.0 or higher going forward.

Overall:

If you would like to just view videos and light internet browsing/tasks, this tablet is a must buy in the Android world.
