A Beautiful Frustration.

Samsung Gear Sport Smartwatch

The Samsung Gear Sport Smartwatch is both amazing and frustrating when it comes to look, feel, and ability. There are countless times that I have been blown away by the features, only to get annoyed that it doesn’t work correctly.

"The ability to start a workout routine that is free on your watch, then have the ability to broadcast that workout to your smartphone/TV simply amazes me."

Samsung Gear Sport Smartwatch Specs:

  • Water Resistant (5 ATM/50 Meters)

  • GPS Navigation

  • Super AMOLED Main Display

  • NFC Compatibility

The Good:

Samsung has always been great with their screen displays. This is no different on the Gear Sport. Even with the screen brightness turned completely down, I was able to clearly see what was on the screen. Textures, photos, album art, etc. came in crystal clear. This watch has also great workout features. The ability to start a workout routine that is free on your watch, then have the ability to broadcast that workout to your smartphone/TV simply amazes me. Also, the ability to customize the watch to your liking is a great perk. For example, when synced to an Android device the main messenger that you use (WhatsApp, Samsung Messages, etc.) will display the messenger shortcuts that was setup on your phone. If it changed to a different messenger, then the shortcuts from the new app will switch over as well.

"When the watch was paired to my iPhone, I routinely ran into disconnects for long periods of time."

The Bad:

Sometimes a watch can feel too heavy and bulky and that is exactly the case for this smartwatch. I’ve never wanted to track my sleeping habits like other smartwatches provide just because I know having the watch around my wrist while sleeping would be extremely uncomfortable. Even though Samsung says this watch is for iOS (Apple) as well, I would highly recommend getting something else for an Apple device (e.g. Apple Watch or FitBit). The Gear Sport is at it's best when on an Android phone. When the watch was paired to my iPhone, I routinely ran into disconnects for long periods of time. This even got to the point where the watch became completely disconnected for over 24 hours even after being setup from scratch. Also, I was really excited to use the talk to text dictation until actually giving it a go. The text dictation was really sensitive to background noise. The background noise would start a never ending cycle of words not actually being dictated. Lastly, I found myself completely frustrated with answering phone calls. If you receive a phone call, the watch will notify you, but that’s it. It’s a mad dash to find your phone to answer your incoming call.

Overall:

Overall Samsung makes beautiful watches that has a ton of capabilities. My only wish was that the software matched the hardware.
